Protect the health, appearance of your smile with custom nightguards for chronic teeth grinding (bruxism)

Crestview Family Dental is committed to compassionate, gentle care for the entire household, from infants to seniors. Our dental family, led by Dr. Kavneet Bindra, accomplishes this worthy mission with relationship-based care built on repeat visits and preventative services.

During regular dental check-ups at our office in Santa Clara, California, Dr. Bindra may discover the telltale signs of “bruxism.” This condition is characterized by chronic teeth grinding and jaw clenching. To protect the teeth and dental restorations from damage caused by bruxism, Dr. Bindra may recommend custom night guards.

The signs

When Dr. Bindra looks into your mouth during an exam, she may see signs of wear and tear. This includes everything from teeth that look flattened, to chips and fractures. Chronic teeth grinding is also associated with enamel erosion. As the tooth’s protective enamel covering is eroded, teeth may become vulnerable to deeper, internal damage. In turn, patients may mention that they notice sensitivity, especially when consuming sweet foods or hot or cold drinks.

Additionally, patients with bruxism may complain about TMJ-like symptoms. The Temporomandibular Joints (TMJs) are present on either side of the face. They connect the skull and the jaws, and function as “hinges” to support fluid movements. When the TMJs are “disordered,” chewing and other functions are impaired. Patients experience pain, and impaired mobility and stiffness. The pain can also manifest across the face, ears, neck, shoulders, and back. Chronic headaches or migraines are also common.

The persistent behavior of clenching the jaws and grinding the teeth, often during sleep when a patient is most relaxed, can “stress” the TMJs. Any time these joints are stressed, pain and other symptoms can arise.

The solution

Nightguards are oral appliances that are worn over the teeth to protect them from damage caused by bruxism. The appliances that Dr. Bindra may prescribe are customized to conform to the unique contours and measurements of your mouth. So, they are designed to precisely fit your mouth for utmost comfort and protection. We also use quality materials. Unlike OTC or off-the-shelf nightguards, ours are a wonderful investment, because they are built to last.

There are many different types of oral devices. We may determine that you can benefit from a specialized type of oral appliance that fits over the front teeth. It protects the teeth from damage caused by bruxing, but it also prevents the back teeth from touching. In this manner, the full pressure that is placed on the TMJs from bruxism is avoided. Patients report fewer or less severe headaches, as well as improvement in or relief from a range of other TMJ symptoms.
