Checkups and Cleanings

A well-balanced diet and routine brushing and flossing go a long way toward preventing tooth decay and gum disease. Even so, there's more to stopping oral health issues than good dental habits. Regular checkups and cleanings with your family dentist from Crestview Family Dental are also crucial to oral health. These appointments allow our skilled dental professionals to diagnose oral health conditions before they escalate. We'll also thoroughly clean your teeth to make sure they stay bright and shiny.

How Often Should You Have a Dental Checkup and Exam?

The American Dental Association recommends that patients with good oral health schedule a dental appointment every six months. Those with a history of gum disease or other dental health problems may require more frequent visits. Dr. Bindra may recommend visiting every three to four months, depending on the status of your oral health.

At Crestview Family Dental, your dental checkup is the most important component of your preventative care. If Dr. Bindra finds any cavities or other conditions, she’ll discuss your treatment plan and ensure that you understand your options.

A checkup typically includes the following:

What’s Included in a Dental Cleaning?

A dental cleaning (prophylaxis) is a procedure that allows the hygienist to use special tools to remove hard and soft debris from your teeth. It begins with an examination of your mouth using a small mirror. Next, the hygienist will use a scaler to remove plaque, preventing gingivitis.

They’ll brush your teeth with gritty toothpaste and a high-powered toothbrush, then floss between every tooth. Once your teeth have been polished, the hygienist will rinse your mouth thoroughly with water. Dr. Bindra will conclude the cleaning with a comprehensive oral exam.

Some patients benefit from additional services, like fluoride and dental sealants. Fluoride is a mineral that strengthens enamel and helps prevent tooth decay. Sealants are thin coats of plastic added to molars and premolars to help prevent decay.

How Long Does a Routine Checkup Take?

A routine dental checkup appointment typically takes around 60 minutes — 40 minutes for the hygienist to clean your teeth and around 10 for Dr. Bindra to perform her exam. Generally, you can be in and out of the dentist’s office in less than an hour.
