Teeth Whitening

Any tooth that’s experienced trauma or severe tooth decay may be restored with a custom-made crown. Teeth whitening is a simple, effective way to change the color of your natural teeth and improve the beauty of your smile. There are several different methods for whitening teeth. However, one of the simplest options is to undergo a professional whitening procedure from the cosmetic dental experts at Crestview Family Dental.

What Causes Tooth Discoloration?

Many factors can contribute to tooth discoloration. Some of the most include:

Bullet point using an orange gear with white check mark on it  Drinking coffee, tea, or wine
Bullet point using an orange gear with white check mark on it  Using cigarettes or other forms of tobacco
Bullet point using an orange gear with white check mark on it  Consuming dark cola or soft drinks
Bullet point using an orange gear with white check mark on it  Eating darkly colored foods like blueberries
Bullet point using an orange gear with white check mark on it  Taking certain medications
Bullet point using an orange gear with white check mark on it  Failing to keep up with proper oral hygiene

Other potential factors, like genetics and age, can’t be controlled.

When Should I Consider Teeth Whitening?

If you aren’t happy with the color of your teeth, discuss your options with the dental team at Crestview Family Dental. We may recommend a professional cleaning before you use certain whitening products to ensure that you get the best results.

Most patients over 16 who are in good health and have no significant conditions are candidates for professional whitening. Dr. Bindra will evaluate your health history and overall oral health to determine whether this service is right for you. This assessment can be completed at a routine checkup or during a separate appointment.

In-Office Whitening Treatment

An in-office professional treatment is your best option for brighter, whiter teeth. In-office whitening uses peroxide-based bleaching agents with higher percentages of the chemical to produce dramatic results. It’s important to note, however, that products with higher peroxide levels may cause sensitivity if applied too long.

Although every brand of in-office bleaching may have slightly different instructions, most follow a standard procedure:

Bullet point using an orange gear with white check mark on it  Pre-treatment shade is selected
Bullet point using an orange gear with white check mark on it  Cheek retractors are placed to expose all visible teeth in the smile line
Bullet point using an orange gear with white check mark on it  A liquid rubber dam is painted onto the gum tissue to protect against irritation
Bullet point using an orange gear with white check mark on it  Bleaching gel is applied to the teeth for several minutes
Bullet point using an orange gear with white check mark on it  The whitening agent is rinsed off and reapplied for an additional 15–30 minutes
Bullet point using an orange gear with white check mark on it  An intense light activates the bleaching material
Bullet point using an orange gear with white check mark on it  The cheek retractors are removed, and the gel is rinsed away
Bullet point using an orange gear with white check mark on it  Post-treatment shade is selected

Some patients see their teeth lighten two to three shades, while others have even more remarkable results.
